Chile holidays: Touring the Country on the Pan-American Highway
The Pan-American Highway is a network of roads that connect the northern stretches of Alaska all the way down to southern Chile or even the tip of Argentina’s Patagonia depending if you’re taking the official or unofficially designated route. Through the Chilean portion of the highway, the most passionate road trippers will be regularly rewarded with spectacular views of the Andean countryside to be remembered on your Chile holidays. As well, you will pass a number of notable cities well worth visiting and spending some time in; here are some of the top stops:
1. Arica will be your entrance to Chile if you’re driving down from Peru. Here, the waters are pleasant, the people are calm and friendly, and the sun shines down happily throughout the year. Unlike many other border towns, Arica is actually a nice place to enjoy; take a stroll down the beaches, embark on some short nearby treks, and recharge on a hearty meal in the downtown before charging onward to the south.
2. Antofagasta is the next big stop, a city situated in the Atacama desert, the driest on earth. Although it is quite industrial, there are still plenty of things to admire. The port is a great place to relax while gazing at the Pacific waves, and Antofagasta’s two main squares are charming corners to discover. If you’re looking for a good but affordable meal, make your way to the city’s market where your tastes can be satiated for just a few dollars.
3. Copiapó is the definition of rustic and cozy if one could say that about a city. It is a rather small destination, but the tranquility is exactly what makes it a nice place to stop by. Rolling hills surround the area and vineyards linger on the outskirts. Chat up some locals for a taste of Chilean hospitatlity.
4. La Serena is another pleasant stop (Chile does not lack nice places to indulge in). Not only does the small city host a few beaches and an impressive Archeological Museum, it is a great place to stay for daytrips to the nearby Fray Jorge National Park, Isla Damas to see sea lions, and the Valle de Elqui especially you enjoy riding horses.
5. Valparaiso is the last big city to visit before going towards the capital of Chile, Santiago. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valparaiso is known for its bohemian atmosphere and an easy addition to any Chile vacation packages. Wander the lovely streets of its old center is a great way to pass an afternoon, and be sure to go on the ascensores (funicular inclines) that visitors and locals alike can take advantage of to reach the city’s higher points. From here, however, the Pan-American Highway officially ends, but unofficial roads continue on to the east towards Quito and eventually Buenos Aires and southern Argentina’s Patagonia, or south towards Quellon.
